The White Hart...where it all began, almost

Writer's picture: Adam FieldingAdam Fielding

We remember it very well, it was an unseasonably warm winters morning in Sherington. Over coffee we put forward our idea for an art evening in the pub, Keith seemed a bit bemused, Rebekah liked the idea, somehow we convinced them to allow us into the pub on a Wednesday night with canvases, water and paint. Art at the Hart was born.

Since then we must have run over forty art evenings in the lovely pub. Keith, Rebekah and of course Giles and Lisa have been very supportive of SLB. Thank you guys!

The pub was at a fork in the road, having recently suffered a fire the remedial and improvement work was just beginning. Now over two years since the fire the pub is thriving again, regularly busy with diners, chatty locals and sleepy dogs. The pub can trace its roots back to 1742, it's a real cosy old building warmed by a log fire with a couple of extensions that provide space for comfortable dining, the Garden Room is well lit and great for larger groups.

‘Before the industrial revolution, when beer was a 1p a quart, James Watt was tinkering with a steam engine, the first canal was being dug, Arthur Guinness was experimenting with a new recipe and Woburn Abbey had the builders back in, The White Hart  was open – quenching the thirst of local folk and travellers alike.’

The White Hart provides a real variety of meals, from hearty soups and chunky sandwiches, through good classic pub food, lighter bites and Sunday Lunch, the team pride themselves on catering for differing dietary requirements and there is a good range of vegetarian and vegan options.

We love Friday Night Fish & Chips, their lovely crispy beer battered cod accompanied by mushy peas and lashings of tartare sauce are a great way to start the weekend. A modern twist is battered Halloumi and chips if you prefer a change.

We've always been keen to attend the annual Beer and Sausage festival which is held in early May. Live entertainment, gins, fruity ciders, craft beers and street food are the highlights of the weekend. A large donation also goes to Willen Hospice from the proceeds of the event as they do from the many events the White Hart run over the year, quizzes, Barn Dances, themed evenings. Giles and the guys work hard to keep a varied events list ticking over.

As regulars and locals to the White Hart it is safe to say we are a bit biased but pay them a visit sometime if you fancy a good meal and a pint in a cosy welcoming environment - you won't be disappointed.

SLB run Art at the Hart every second Wednesday of the month at 7.45pm and we offer private Sip n Paint parties in the Garden Room which include a meal before your arty endeavours.
